There are 13 Otter species and these are semi-aquatic animals and one can be seen during the amazing Safaris in Uganda. Otters differ in size with the largest known as a giant otter which grow up to 5.9 feet long. The smallest of otters is the Asian small clawed otter which grows up 90 centimeters long and weighs about 5kg.

Otters have long-streamlined bodies and their feet are webbed to allow them swim properly. They are seen timely floating in water bodies on their backs something that shows they are good swimmers.

They have two different layers of fur; that is the dense undercoat which is used for trapping air and the topcoat which has is waterproof. The unfortunate thing is that this fur is on high demand in many countries and that is why they are almost extinct all over the world.

Otters are social animals that live in groups known as rafts and are nocturnal so the best chance for seeing them is taking on a late evening or night game drive while on your Uganda safari because they come out of to hunt.

They spend most of their time playing, wrestling and also chasing after their own tails.

During day time, these animals spend a lot of time grooming them-selves and this is the time they reduce their fur on their bodies by biting it off although sometimes rub their body against rocks, logs and grass.

Where to find Otters in Uganda?

While on a safari in Uganda, otters are often seen at the Uganda wildlife education Centre and Lake Mburo national park in southern Uganda and there are 3 types of otters living in this park. These animals are typical carnivorous species feeding on meat only

At 2-5 years an otter is mature enough for reproduction and after a female otter conceives, smaller otter types have a gestation period of 2 months while bigger ones like the sea otters have a gestation period that goes up to 5 months.

After the mother gives birth normally 1-5 young ones and sea otters give birth within water whereas the rest do this on land.

The young ones of an otter are referred to as pups weighing about 128 grams at the time of birth. The pups are born with eyes sealed but later on open when they turn 1 month and by the time they turn 2 months, they are can swim. When they are 1 year old, they are ready going on their own without their mother protection.

Otters have a life span of about 12 years while living in the wild although they can live longer while living in captivity.

The post Otters in Uganda appeared first on Kidepo Valley National Park Uganda.

The raw beauty of Kidepo

Samuel Makanga

Travel blog

When it comes to adventure, Kidepo Valley National Park truly stands out, this precious...

The post The raw beauty of Kidepo appeared first on Kidepo Valley National Park Uganda.

When it comes to adventure, Kidepo Valley National Park truly stands out, this precious natural resource has been visited and returned to and the extra-ordinary features on it offers shape its exceptional beauty, which remains a myth to those who have not visited and a secret to those who have taken an effort to visit the beautiful remote Kidepo.

Kidepo Valley National park is Uganda’s best safari destination for taking wildlife safaris / game viewing tours on a Uganda Safari tour. Giving you an opportunity to see carnivores, ungulates, and some primates which are commonly encountered on a Gorilla trekking safari in Bwindi Forest National Park for the mountain Gorillas and chimpanzees tracking in Kibale National Park for the chimps.

There are also high chances of spotting tree climbing lions that always sit on sauces trees along Narus valley or on the rock just as you get into the Apoka Park Headquarter, though these rare tree climbing lions are most common in the Ishasha section of Queen Elizabeth National Park in the south west of the country. Starting from Apoka Rest Camp other animals that can be seen include elephants, leopards, buffaloes, bush duikers, jackals, bush bucks, bush pigs, kavirondo bush babies and much more.

The Park boasts of an extensive bird species too with over 465 species recorded. Birds that standout include the ostrich and the Kori bustard which are principally associated with arid regions. The park also has quite outstanding numbers of birds of prey. In this regard, 58 species of birds of prey have been recorded and amongst these 14 are believed to be endemic to Kidepo and the Karamoja region.

With Apoka Rest Camp offering amazing accommodation in chalet, here you will get food and drink stocks that are basic and often very limited so it’s advisable to carry an extra on your own. There are also other several campsites located near Apoka.

Kidepo Valley National Park can be accessible either by road or by air. The most commonly driven Safari route from Kampala is via Gulu and Kitgum, a 600km journey taking a minimum of 12 hours and it’s advisable to use a 4×4 Safari Landcruiser on this journey.

This national game park is 1,442 square kilometers. Kidepo Valley National Park harbors scenery that cannot be easily found in any other parks in East Africa. Those few who make the journey north of the country through the wild frontier region of Karamoja to visit it, would very much agree that it is among the most remarkable in Africa’s finest wilderness.

The only two rivers in the national park; Kidepo and Narus, are seasonal rivers, which decrease and disappear in the dry season; with the only permanent water in the park seen in wetlands and remnant pools along the southern Narus valley near Apoka, and as a result most of the wild animals can be easily spotted in this area.

Kidepo’s expansive landscape, largely uninhibited by woodland and forest, are a result of the open tree savannah habitat that dominates the park. Hills have been covered by the dry mountain forest while some water courses support acacia forests.

The less common ungulates in the park involve the greater and lesser Kudu, Chandlers, Mountain Reedbuck, klipspringer and Guenther’s dik-dik.

And be sure to spot one of the most amazing animals in Kidepo is Bull Bull a huge male Elephant, such a huge animal weighing over 6,000kg, he remains the darling of Apoka. “He is a true gentleman. A star.” That is how the residents at Apoka Lodge describes him.

The post The raw beauty of Kidepo appeared first on Kidepo Valley National Park Uganda.

CNN Names Kidepo among 8 Best Safari Destinations in Africa

Samuel Makanga

Travel blog

Kidepo national park yet again appreciated for its beauty. Kidepo was named second of the eight national parks. They added.

Kidepo national park is located far North eastern Uganda in the district of Kaabong north west of Moroto (the largest town in the region) between Uganda’s borders with Sudan and Kenya. The national park is distant from Kampala-Uganda’s capital (some 418km) and this has been the reason for fewer number of visitors to the park. How to get to Kidepo national park however shouldn’t be the reason for failure to get to this great wilderness, there various comfortable options including fly in safaris.

Kidepo national park is home to over 86 mammal species with about 28 endemics to the park. In truth, cheetah on safari can be even more difficult to sight because their population is less abundant.

Regular sightings of cheetahs on safari are usually sporadic and local, hence they are limited to only a few regions where the habitat and predator pressures are most favorable.

Almost everyone knows that this greyhound of the cat family is the fastest land animal on the planet – reaching speeds of 120km/h.

But this cat also has many other remarkable qualities. In fact, the cheetah’s unique body structure, long legs, flexible spine, semi-retractable claws, and the long tail is what allows this incredible creature to achieve the unbelievable speed.

Thanks to their tremendous speed, the cheetahs are among the most successful hunters. However, the advantage of speed comes with lack of strength to fight the lions and hyenas and they usually snatch his food from him.

The post Cheetahs In Kidepo appeared first on Kidepo Valley National Park Uganda.

Ostriches In Kidepo

Samuel Makanga

Travel blog

Ostriches In Kidepo Valley National Park An Ostrich (Struthio camelus) is a...

The post Ostriches In Kidepo appeared first on Kidepo Valley National Park Uganda.

Ostriches In Kidepo Valley National Park

An Ostrich (Struthio camelus) is a huge flightless bird inherent to Africa and one of the two extant species of ostriches, the only living members of the genus Struthio in the ratite order of birds. It is distinctive in its appearance, with a small head and wings, a long neck and legs with massive two large forward pointing toes with a body size of 1.8-2.75 m and weighs up to 155 kg. The male ostriches are black with white wings as well as tail feathers the female ones have brownish grey color with the legs always brighter with pink necks during breeding. They possess very large eyes measuring almost 5 cm across allowing them to spot predators like lions within a long distance.

Ostriches walk at an average of 4km/hour! However, in case of a warning sign of predators threatening it or its eggs the bird can sprint at a terrific speed of 55 km/h (34 mph) or even up to about 70 km/h (43 mph) -the fastest land speed of any bird. So, on your wildlife safari in Uganda to Kidepo Valley National Park make sure you don’t get it worried when you get close to its eggs or else be ready to sprint at a faster speed.

This is the world’s largest living bird and lays the largest eggs of all birds in Uganda only found in Kidepo Valley National Park one of the distant and rewarding Uganda wildlife safari destinations far northeastern part of the country.

Ostriches like dust bathing and at times you may find them burying their heads in the sand while the rest of the body is seen.

Ostriches are generally silent but during mating season, they display a range of roars, booms and hisses. The male bird is known for its booming call that can be heard over 1 km away. They are very strong birds and can harm it’s predators like lions and humans by just kicking and can even cause harm some times.

An Ostrich Incubating

An ostrich lays up to 15 eggs a month, each laid after every two days especially during the dry months of the year, usually between February and June. The preparation of the laying ground is done by the male ostrich as it digs a hole of about 1 meter wide and 1 foot deep then later fills it with lake sand. This helps to generate warmth that would enable hatching when the eggs are laid.

Ostriches have a complex breeding system with the major and minor birds ably laying eggs in the same nest. Usually one major and 5-6 minors lay an average of 25 eggs in the same nest. With incubation, the major hen/female incubates during the day while the Cock/male takes its turn during the night. After this routine for about 6 weeks the chicks hatch and leave the nest after 4 days. They are fully mature at the age of three to four years.

Ostriches are omnivores and therefore feed on things like locusts, seeds, flowers, fruits and swallow sand and pebbles. However, they do not have teeth therefore swallow pebbles to grind their food. The bird can go without drinking water for several days surviving on metabolic water and moisture ingested in roots, seeds and insects.

What Preys On The Ostrich?

The Egyptian Vulture is the major predator to the Ostrich preying on its eggs. Each vulture can eat six or more eggs at a time. The vulture uses stones to break Ostrich eggs and because of this it is called “The tool-using Egyptian Vulture.” Lions are also predators to the ostriches.

Kidepo Valley National Park is known as one of the best wildernesses in Africa and a surprisingly distant Uganda safari destination where no one should miss. When you are planning to safari Uganda, don’t hesitate to visit this wilderness filled with unique wild species.

The post Ostriches In Kidepo appeared first on Kidepo Valley National Park Uganda.

Meet Bull Bull, Kidepo’s Oldest Elephant

Samuel Makanga

Travel blog

Kidepo Valley National Park is indeed a distinct Uganda wildlife safari destination...

The post Meet Bull Bull, Kidepo’s Oldest Elephant appeared first on Kidepo Valley National Park Uganda.

Kidepo Valley National Park is indeed a distinct Uganda wildlife safari destination with not only special endemics but also wonderful and unique wildlife species like Bull Bull. Bull Bull is Kidepo Valley National Parks oldest Elephant that enjoys local brew known as “kwete”. The 74-year-old mammal weighs about six tones. Bull Bull is known to have a very good sense of smell and hearing therefore being able to detect something from so many kilometers away which is of advantage to it since it has got a very poor eyesight.

Bull Bull takes alcohol or local brew which makes it high though this makes it very sensitive and can destroy a lot of property. When it smells maize flour, bananas, pineapples, porridge or local brew it will do anything possible to get the drink. This can be so disastrous in that it can go to an extent of breaking down the house.

The love from the people of Kidepo to Bull Bull has made the elephant so familiar to people and interacts with them occasionally. Bull Bull no longer goes to the bush to look for grass, tree leaves, flowers, shrubs and wild fruits but stays with human beings and moves through their houses freely to get food. However, besides the alcohol when the grass dry’s, Bull Bull joins other elephants to eat almost any kind of vegetation they can find.

Elephants are some of the most iconic animals in the world and loved to be sighted by tourists on wildlife safaris in Uganda. The elephants are the large mammals forming the family Elephantidae in the order Proboscidea and are scattered throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Their soft eyes, gentle nature, and comical personalities as youngsters is amazing to sight on safari.

However, elephants alone are not the attractions in Kidepo Valley National Park, there is a lot more to see in this Uganda’s best safari destination and here are highlights on what you will come across;

Wildlife in Kidepo Valley National Park

A profusion of wildlife with over 77 mammal species with about 28 endemics to this park including the fastest land animal-the cheetah, Bat-eared fox, carcal and klipspringer.
